Betsy DeVos – Politcal and Academic Donations

Betsy DeVos has been present at the philanthropy scene for many a decade and has donated vast amounts of money to many charities. The focus of her charitable giving can also speak about her personal and political views as well as stand witness of her objectives as Trump’s Secretary of Education.


Over the course of her long portfolio in philanthropy, Betsy DeVos has been focusing on donating to the Republican party as well as the education sector with a strict emphasis on Christian schools and groups and higher academic institutions. The donations increased after Betsy Prince, and Dick DeVos got together and then increased once more after the established their Family Foundation together back in 1989.


For the DeVos couple, the past few years have been successful. In 2015, for example, The Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation doled out well over 10 M on a number of organizations. Additionally, The Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation also pledged $3.2 million that year in grants which were to be paid out over the next couple of year.


For that year, The Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation a funded The Partnership for Educational Justice with $400 000 which is an organization owned by Mrs. Campbell Brown, the former CNN anchor. The foundation also sponsored Brown’s Lpndspeaker Media, Inc. with the same amount of money. Later Brown published a praise for Betsy DeVos although she did state she would recuse herself from making publications about the couple.


In terms of higher academic institutions, The Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation gave $150 thousand to Success Academy Charter Schools and then the same amount at a later date. There have been a vast number of universities that have benefitted from the giving of the DeVos couple as well as from the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation.


Both Betsy and Dick DeVos are strong proponents of Christianity, and so they donate only to Christian schools. One of them is the Potter’s House which a Christian school located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Betsy DeVos used to study there at the Ridley College. The Potter’s House received $150 thousand in 2015, and since then it has been getting regular donations.


The political giving of the couple are reserved strictly for conservative causes such as the Republican party Betsy DeVos has been funneling money into organizations that promote conservative political views on campuses such as her own political beliefs. Some groups of the sort include the Institute for Justice, the Intercollegate Studies Istitute, Inc., as well as the American Enterprise Institute for Public Publicity, on which board Betsy DeVos has been sitting.


Currently, Betsy DeVos is trying to rebuild the education system in the US as she is standing by Trump’s side as his Secretary of Education.
